Our Stories: Part Three

Matt’s Story

Matt's journey in the renewable energy sector began with his studies at Swinburne, where he simultaneously undertook an apprenticeship. In the mid-2000s, he gained experience in auditing and sustainability, eventually transitioning to the installation of solar, battery, and wind systems.

After completing his apprenticeship, Matt quickly advanced to managing a residential solar installation team, then moved into commercial installations and project management for large commercial and government partners. In 2016, Matt took the leap and founded Central Spark Victoria, a company dedicated to providing innovative renewable energy solutions, with a particular focus on off-grid projects.

Throughout his career, Matt has maintained a strong commitment to creating and sustaining a business that is not only successful but also supportive and sustainable.

Dani’s Story

After finishing high school, Dani didn’t get the opportunity to pursue a trade — her parents were concerned it wasn’t the right path for women. Instead, she explored various careers in sport and recreation. But in 2022, everything changed when she enrolled in a free Certificate II program supported by the Victorian Government. That opportunity led her to the WAVE program and set her on a new course.

Today, Dani is working towards her Certificate III in Electrotechnology. She credits the support of Solar Victoria’s Women in Solar program for making her journey possible, and she hopes her story encourages others to follow their passion — no matter where they begin.

Nadyne’s Story

“The solar industry found me. I was ready to leave my second career as a chef and return to my electrical roots — I just didn’t know how.

My first apprenticeship was in 2000 as an Avionics Aircraft Maintenance Engineer — big words for someone who installs and repairs electrical, instrument and radio systems on aircraft. It was the hardest four years of my life. I made it through and spent another 8.5 years in the industry.

I looked into becoming an Electrician, but was told I was overqualified and would need to start from scratch — no recognition of prior learning. I was devastated. That prompted a complete shift and a second apprenticeship, this time as a chef.

Older and wiser, I navigated that path more confidently and enjoyed it — but I missed the problem-solving and mental challenge of electrical work.

Eight years later, I moved to Castlemaine for a fresh start. I joined Central Spark Victoria in sales and design, and when the company expanded, I stepped into the role of Operations Manager. Today, I work with an incredible team in the renewables sector, doing work I love — and finally, I get to be a role model and support network for women in the industry. I’m proud to be part of the change, showing that women can achieve anything.”
